Detailed instructions for installing Caret on your Mac

Installing Caret

This guide will walk you through the process of installing Caret on your Mac and setting up the necessary permissions.

System Requirements

Caret is currently available for macOS only. Windows and Linux versions are planned for future releases.

To run Caret, you’ll need:

• macOS 12.0 (Monterey) or later
• At least 4GB of RAM
• 200MB of available storage space
• Active internet connection

Download and Install

1. Download Caret

   Download the latest version of Caret from our download page.

2. Open the installer

   Locate the downloaded file (Caret.dmg) in your Downloads folder and double-click to open it.

3. Drag to Applications

   Drag the Caret app icon to the Applications folder when prompted.

4. Launch Caret

   Open your Applications folder and double-click on the Caret app to launch it.

   You may see a warning about opening an app from an unidentified developer. If this happens, right-click (or Control-click) on the Caret app and select “Open” from the context menu, then click “Open” in the dialog that appears.

Grant Permissions

Caret needs several permissions to function properly. You’ll be prompted to grant these during your first launch.

Screen Recording Permission

This permission allows Caret to capture your meeting content.

When prompted:

1. Click “Open System Settings”
2. Toggle the switch next to Caret to ON position
3. Restart Caret for the changes to take effect

Microphone Permission

This permission is needed to capture your voice during meetings.

When prompted:

1. Click “Allow” in the permission dialog
2. You can verify this permission is granted in System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone

Notifications Permission

This allows Caret to notify you when it detects a meeting or when your transcription is ready.

When prompted:

1. Click “Allow” to enable notifications
2. You can customize notification settings in System Settings > Notifications > Caret

Troubleshooting Installation Issues

App won't open

If you see a message that the app is damaged or can’t be opened:

1. Open System Settings > Privacy & Security
2. Scroll down to the “Security” section
3. Click “Open Anyway” next to the Caret message
4. Follow the prompts to open the app

Missing permissions

If you need to grant permissions after skipping them:

1. Open System Settings > Privacy & Security
2. Select the appropriate permission category (Screen Recording, Microphone, etc.)
3. Toggle the switch next to Caret to ON position

Installation fails

If installation fails:

1. Restart your Mac
2. Ensure you have admin privileges
3. Check that you have enough disk space
4. Try downloading the installer again
